Air Duct HVAC Sealing and Insulation

According to the US Department of Energy, typical duct systems lose 25 to 45 percent of the energy put out by the central furnace, heat pump, or air conditioner.

duct insulation saves energyIf only one half of the typical energy lost from uninsulated and unsealed ducts in attics or crawlspaces were prevented, it would amount to over $170 per year in energy costs for the typical Delaware Valley home.

This energy is lost primarily in two ways: conduction and infiltration.

Conduction occurs when hot or cold air makes the temperature of the duct itself increase or decrease which, in turn, changes the temperature of the air on the outside of the duct. If the ducts run through an unconditioned space, this energy is lost entirely. Adequate insulation along such ducts will significantly improve the amount of conductive loss.

Infiltration energy loss occurs when ducts are not air-tight and heated or cooled air is released directly into an unconditioned space. Even if ducts are located entirely within the conditioned space of a home, inadequately sealed ducts can cause energy loss by creating pressure differentials inside the home which can increase air leakage of the building shell or potential backdrafting of combustion appliances or increased levels of soil gases within the building.

With the use of pressure testing equipment and guages, we can identify the leaks in your duct system and properly seal those problems. Once properly sealed, we can insulate the ducts to prevent unwanted heat transfer to unconditioned or semi-conditioned areas of your home.

Prior to having this services, many clients obtain an energy audit, during which the auditor will assess whether your home may benefit from duct sealing and insulation.

Wondering whether you may need duct sealing and/or insulation and how much this service for your home will cost? Fill out the form here and we will contact you to arrange an appropriate time for an estimate.
